Equal Business Opportunity panel to present awards

The Equal Business Opportunity Committee of the Howard County Economic Development Authority has announced a new category in its awards program, which recognizes outstanding achievement and leadership by members of the county's diverse business community.

This year, awards will be presented in the categories of Business Achievement Star, Individual Achievement Star, Business Commitment Star, Individual Commitment Star and a new category that will recognize achievement by a high school student -- Rising Business Star.

The Rising Business Star award is a $1,000 scholarship, to be given to a Howard County student who is a minority, female or disabled and has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit.

Applications are due Friday. The winner will receive the award at the eighth EBO Awards program from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. April 23 at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville.

Spring Job/Career Fair at community college

Howard Community College will hold its Spring Job/Career Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Galleria on the college campus, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Employer representatives will discuss job opportunities and schedule interviews. Participants may bring their resumes.

Howard Chamber luncheon is March 21

The Howard County Chamber of Commerce will hold a general membership luncheon March 21 at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel, 10207 Wincopin Circle, Columbia.

Bill Roberts, president of Verizon Maryland Inc., will speak.

Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $35 for members; $45 for others.

Business skills training: Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides entrepreneurial training, is recruiting candidates for its next business skills training course. Candidates will be screened from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6. The application deadline is March 29. The group offers a three-month training course, as well as post-training business consultation, mentoring, financing strategies, community networking assistance, Internet training, government procurement assistance and resource sharing. The fee, which ranges from $85 to $325, is based on a sliding scale. Payment plans are available. Information: 410- 727-4921.

Scholarships offered: The Business Women's Network of Howard County is accepting applications for two scholarships to be awarded in June, one of them to a high school senior.
