WMC presentation Tuesday to focus on `Truth About Beauty'

Camille Cooper has made a living in front of the camera -television, movies and magazines.

But as she starved herself to sculpt a Hollywood physique, she was forced to visit the hospital emergency room for a bleeding stomach ulcer that led to her next big role: speaking out against the media's obsession with thinness and beauty.

Cooper will present "The Truth About Beauty" at 7 p.m. Tuesday in McDaniel Lounge at Western Maryland College. Her free lecture is part of WMC's observance of Women's History Month.

In addition to discussing unrealistic media standards, Cooper will look at distorted body images, eating disorders, entertainment industry issues and sexist double standards.

By using before and after slides, she demonstrates how retouching, lighting and camera filters distort images. She says she hopes that pointing out the illusion will help women realize that the media's standard of beauty is a fabrication that is impossible to attain.

Cooper's credits include five movies, more than 10 television series and numerous commercials and print ads.
