Orioles 5, Mets 1

March 09, 2002

The game

Playing under blue skies for a change, the Orioles scored twice in the first inning and once in the second off Steve Trachsel. The Mets were blanked until the sixth, when a two-out throwing error by catcher Fernando Lunar on an attempted pickoff allowed former Oriole Tony Tarasco to score. Right fielder Jay Gibbons provided the defensive highlight with a diving catch near the line on a windblown fly ball by Edgar Alfonso in the first inning.

The arms

Given the start in place of Jason Johnson, Chris Brock turned in three scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, both in the first inning, and didn't walk a batter. Rodrigo Lopez made his spring debut and allowed one unearned run. He gave up a double and two singles. Lee Marshall, B.J. Ryan and Willis Roberts turned in scoreless innings.

The bats

A late addition to the lineup, third baseman Jose Leon hit a bases-empty homer leading off the second, singled and scored twice. Marty Cordova had a run-scoring double in the first. Mike Moriarty added a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Injury update

Johnson couldn't pitch because of a split nail on his right middle finger. Melvin Mora is nursing a strained calf muscle. Brian Roberts (elbow) hopes to play within the next three days after taking ground balls and doing some light hitting. Tony Batista will undergo an MRI today because of pain that runs from behind his neck to the top of his head. Chris Singleton missed his second game because of a sore hamstring.

The number

5 - Consecutive games without a win for the Orioles, including Thursday's rain-shortened tie, until yesterday.

The quote

"He might be available a lot sooner than we anticipated." - manager Mike Hargrove on infielder Ed Rogers, who played in a simulated game yesterday. - Roch Kubatko
