Man killed, one hurt in crane accident

One man died and a co-worker was seriously injured yesterday after they were thrown from the platform of a crane that tipped over at the Bata Shoe factory site, where a mixed-use development is being built along the Bush River.

Gary Bellmyer, 48, of Havre de Grace and Samuel B. Teague, 24, of Street had been stringing lights through trees before the 3:20 p.m. accident at the site off the 4500 block of Pulaski Highway, Abingdon fire officials said.

Officials said Bellmyer went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. Teague had head, neck and chest injuries and was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in BaltimoreState police are investigating.
