Nathan Bachmann

No wrestler provided a more stunning finish than the 135-pound sophomore. Bachmann, who collected Harford County and Class 4A-3A North Region championships, completed the sweep Saturday by capturing the Class 4A-3A state title.

Bachmann won the gold medal by pinning South Region champion Eli Black of Chopticon in 5:27 in the final. Black, favored to win the crown, had lost only once in 34 matches before falling to Bachmann, who became only the second wrestler in Cougars history to win a state title since John Conley in 1980 at 119 pounds. Bachmann, who placed fourth at the regional tournament and qualified for states last season, finished his year with a 36-2 record.

The senior point guard clinched two of the No. 11 Golden Bears' regional playoff victories by nailing two free throws in the final seven seconds of each game. She also amassed 71 points, 30 rebounds, 29 assists and 16 steals in three games in leading Hammond to the Class 2A West Region championship.

Her free throws sealed a 51-47 regional win at Middletown and a 50-47 quarterfinal victory over then-No. 14 Glenelg. Also an All-Metro soccer goalie, she scored 23 points and had nine assists vs. Middletown. She had 22 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists vs. Glenelg. In the semifinal, she scored 26 points and had 11 assists, nine rebounds and seven steals in a 59-46 triumph over then-No. 17 Centennial.
