RICHMOND, Va. -- The upset trend at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament did not beckon the Morgan State women yesterday.

Undermined by turnovers, a key injury and poor rebounding, the 10th-seeded Lady Bears fell rather meekly to No. 7 UMES, 63-44, in a first-round game at the Arthur Ashe Center.

Morgan State thus completed its season with one victory in 28 games, the win coming over North Carolina A&T on Jan. 26. The Aggies surprised Bethune-Cookman in their first-round game yesterday, 57-53.

Without leading scorer Sherie Cornish (Severn), Morgan couldn't offer much resistance to the Hawks, who stashed away the decision with a 15-2 run early in the second half.

Cornish has been out for several weeks with a foot ailment.

Morgan had closed a 13-point halftime deficit to 34-27 when UMES (12-16) uncorked the decisive run, which featured three baskets by Destiney Avent and a three-pointer by Kimberly Martin.

When it ended, the Hawks had a 49-29 cushion and had virtually clinched their third victory of the season over their in-state rivals.

"It's always hard to beat a team the third time. We sat there and watched two upsets today," Hawks coach Surina Dixon said. "I think that kind of gave us the message that you have to be ready."

Avent and Zereena Stephens each finished with 12 points for UMES, which next meets No. 3 Norfolk State on Thursday.

Morgan committed 28 turnovers, a continuation of a season-long problem, and surrendered 28 offensive rebounds.
