Basket bingo will raise funds for school's Sept. 11 memorial

Sykesville Middle School will hold basket bingo Friday to buy peace poles for the school grounds to honor the victims of Sept. 11.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. and games will begin at 6 p.m. Bingo will be held at the school, 7301 Springfield Ave.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased from the school.

Cheerleaders' sock hop to be held Friday at church

Sykesville Raiders Cheerleading Squad will sponsor a sock hop from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Community Church.

The cost is $5. Snacks and drinks will be available.

More than 150 vendors set for Liberty High craft fair

Liberty High School PTSA will hold its annual spring craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the school in Eldersburg.

More than 150 craft vendors and exhibitors will offer home decorator items, gifts and crafts.

Refreshments will be available. No strollers are permitted by order of the fire marshal.

Admission is $1 for ages 17 and older.

Proceeds will go to the school for student recognition, scholarships and cultural programs.

Cub Scout flea market to feature silent auction

Cub Scout Pack 392 will hold a flea market and silent auction from 8 a.m. to noon March 16 at St. Joseph's Catholic Community Church in Eldersburg.

A bake table and coffee will be available.

The auction will include items from Sykesville and the Baltimore area, including sports memorabilia.

Spaces are available at the flea market.

Writing club, story time among library's programs

Eldersburg branch library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, is offering:

"Wiggles and Giggles - Under the Big Top" for ages 2 to 3 at 7 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. Saturday. This interactive story time will focus on music and movement activities.

"sedoC terceS" for ages 7 to 10 at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday. Children can learn how to create and crack secret codes.

Eldersburg Book Club for adults at 2 p.m. Saturday to discuss Sophie's Choice by William Styron.

Writer's Circle, a creative writing club for ages 11 to 17, at 7 p.m. Monday.

"The Art of Democracy - Issues and Ethics in Politics" for adults at 7 p.m. Monday. The series will feature Jacob Yingling, former member of the Maryland General Assembly and community leader, discussing why and how to run for public office, how to judge polls and pollsters, and the controversy surrounding the electoral college.

Sykesville police receive $2,000 bike safety grant

Sykesville Police Department has been awarded a Bicycle Safety Grant through Carroll County Safe Kids Programs.

Police Chief John R. Williams said the grant, about $2,000, would be used to further enforce the town's bicycle helmet ordinances, education and advice. The department will use the money to present bicycle rodeos, safety clinics, lectures at local schools and enforcement checkpoints.

Liberty High student to play with city orchestra

Liberty High School student Leslie Dragan was selected to perform with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra Feb. 27 in the annual Side-by-Side concert.

The concert gives students the opportunity to perform with professional orchestra musicians from the first rehearsal through the public concert.

Student string musicians from across the state were chosen to participate in the concert, which featured Brahms' Hungarian Dances, 1, 3, 10.

Scholarship offered by Knights of Columbus

Knights of Columbus Council 7612 of Eldersburg annually awards the Robert H. Clark Memorial Scholarship to a deserving senior from Liberty or South Carroll high schools.

The scholarship is awarded annually in the amount of $2,000 - $8,000 over a four-year period.

Eligible students must be the child of a parent who lives within the boundaries of Liberty or South Carroll high schools; or is a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Community Church in Eldersburg; or is a member or was a member at the time of death of Council 7612.

Applications must be postmarked by March 31.
