Monfett's first goal pushes Duke past Terps in double OT

DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Matt Monfett scored his first career goal with two seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift Duke to a 9-8 win over Maryland in an Atlantic Coast Conference men's lacrosse game yesterday at rain-soaked Koskinen Stadium.

The Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0) led 6-5 with 8:23 left to go in the third quarter, but the Terps (2-1, 0-1) responded with three unanswered goals to claim an 8-6 advantage with 10:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Duke clawed back as Kevin Cassese forced overtime, scoring with eight seconds remaining in regulation.

Kevin Brennan and Alex Lieske led Duke with three goals apiece. Maryland was paced by Ryan Moran's three goals.

Goalie Danny McCormick registered 12 saves, while his Duke counterpart , A.J. Kincel, was credited with 17 stops.
