Expos 5, Orioles 1

March 02, 2002|By Roch Kubatko

The game

Montreal scored twice in the first inning after the Orioles had taken a 1-0 lead, and added three more runs in the sixth off minor-league pitcher Travis Driskill. The Orioles had a chance to tie in the ninth but left the bases loaded when Luis Matos bounced out. Jay Gibbons had a tough day in right field, turning the wrong way while getting back late on a ball and later making a weak throw home.

The arms

Sean Douglass became the latest pitcher to go two innings, allowing two runs in the first after an error by shortstop Mike Moriarty. Lee Stevens and Orlando Cabrera drove in the runs. Douglass also walked a batter in the second. John Stephens gave up a single during two shutout innings, but Driskill was lit up in the sixth. Mike Paradis got through the seventh after a leadoff single, and Lee Marshall stranded two in the eighth.

The bats

The Orioles have scored in only two of 17 spring innings. They got a run in the first yesterday on a two-out double by Chris Singleton, a walk to Jeff Conine and infield hit by Gibbons. Conine added a double, and Tony Batista, Geronimo Gil, Ryan McGuire and Larry Bigbie singled.

Injury update

None.

The number

The quote
