Delegates approve amendment on protective orders

A proposed state constitutional amendment that would allow District Court commissioners to issue protective orders was approved unanimously by the House of Delegates yesterday.

The measure would allow commissioners to issue civil protective orders to victims of domestic abuse during hours when the District Court is closed. Currently, only judges can issue protective orders. The amendment is designed to give abuse victims the opportunity to obtain legal protection at nights and on weekends.

The Senate has passed a similar bill, and the two chambers must resolve minor differences. If the legislation is passed, the amendment would be placed on the ballot in the fall for voter approval.
