Shabbat service part of national outreach to unaffiliated Jews

Columbia Jewish Congregation, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, will be one of approximately 750 congregations to present "Shabbat Across America/Canada," an event organized the National Jewish Outreach Program to acquaint nonaffiliated Jews with the fourth of the Ten Commandments: observing a weekly day of rest, or Shabbat.

The congregation invites observant and nonobservant Jews to a traditional Shabbat service and festive meal from 6:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 8. A tot service for children to age 5 will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by a potluck Shabbat dinner. The Friday night service will begin at 8 p.m.

The event is being held in response to the growing rate of Jewish assimilation in North America.

Mass of Healing in presence of relic to be offered tonight

The Conventual Franciscan Friars of St. Joseph Cupertino Friary, 11290 Folly Quarter Road, near Glenelg, will offer a Mass of Healing in the presence of a major relic of St. Anthony of Padua at 7:30 p.m. today.

After Mass, there will be an opportunity to be prayed over by a priest and to offer private intentions.

"Tenebrae," a Lenten event recalling the last hours of Jesus on Earth with Scripture readings, hymns, prayer and reflection, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Registration is not necessary.

"The Passion and Death of Jesus in the Franciscan Tradition," a day of reflection on the Franciscan perspective of the mystery, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 10.

The event will conclude with the celebration of the Eucharist at 3 p.m. The cost is $35, including coffee and tea upon arrival and lunch.

Author Steven Silbiger to speak about success

Temple Isaiah will present an evening with Steven Silbiger, author of The Jewish Phenomenon, who will speak about success in life at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Room 200 of the Oakland Mills Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.

The event is for teen-agers and adults. Light refreshments will be served. The cost is $5 for adults; teen-agers will be admitted free.

Linden-Linthicum to hold pancake supper March 8

Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church, 12101 Linden-Linthicum Lane, Clarksville, will hold a pancake supper from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 8. Pancakes, Boar- man's sausage, chicken gravy and applesauce will be served. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children to age 13.

Shalom School accepting applications for next year

Shalom School, celebrating its 25th year as an unaffiliated Jewish Sunday school in Columbia, is accepting registration for the 2002- 2003 academic year.

The school, which teaches Judaism and the Hebrew language through crafts, music and other activities, accepts children from preschool through second grade.

Classes meet for two hours every other Sunday. Parents are invited to observe a class. Interfaith families are welcome.

Calvary Lutheran holding Lenten enrichment events

Calvary Lutheran Church is offering small-group Lenten enrichment programs at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Participants are welcome to attend one or all of the remaining meetings. The program began last week.

The groups are "Body," focused on good physical health; "Mind," which will work on understanding relationships to others and to God; "Spirit," which will focus on prayer and spiritual development; "Heart," which will use videos to discuss daily life challenges; and "Just for Kids," in which children ages 6 to 12 can enjoy arts and crafts activities and learn Bible messages.

First Evangelical to offer new-member orientation

First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3604 Chatham Road in Ellicott City, is offering new-member orientation sessions from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and March 10 in the Fellowship Center.

Child care will be available. Registration is required.

The church is celebrating the Wednesdays remaining in Lent with vesper services at 7:30 p.m.
