Townsend, O'Malley expected at same event

February 28, 2002

Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend will join Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley on the roster of speakers for a Carroll County Democratic Party fund-raiser March 9 at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers in Westminster.

O'Malley will give the keynote speech at the Jefferson Jackson dinner, the local party's most lucrative annual fund-raiser. The late addition of Townsend should not be seen as a competitive move by her against a potential rival for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, said Tom McCarron, local party chairman. Townsend responded to a long-standing invitation, he said.

"She's always welcome to attend anything we host," said Carroll party spokeswoman Laura O'Callaghan. "She's the lieutenant governor. Anytime she'd want to show up, we'd give her the chance to say a few words."
