Book-club meetings for kids 11 and older

Two Howard County public libraries are holding book-club meetings next week for children 11 and up and their parents or guardians. Take a look at what will be discussed:

Eva by Peter Dickinson -- A provocative tale about 14-year-old Eva, whose brain is rescued from her car-crash-damaged body and transplanted into the body of a chimp, in which she lives out the rest of her life. The author explores issues of animal rights throughout the story. "Chapter Chat" takes place Tuesday at the Miller Branch Library in Ellicott City, 9421 Frederick Road, 410-313-1950.

Petey by Ben Mikaelson -- This book follows the development of Petey, a boy living in the early 20th century who is deemed feeble-minded by doctors who don't understand his cerebral palsy. He's sentenced to spend his life in various institutions. "Go Girl!" for mothers and daughters, takes place Wednesday at the East Columbia Branch Library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, 410-313-7700.

Both groups start at 7 p.m. Registration is required, as is reading the book before you show up.
