Harlem Wizards dribbling back into town March 16

Basketball fund-raiser to be held at WMC

February 24, 2002

The Tourism Council of Carroll County is bringing the renowned Harlem Wizards and their full-court basketball fireworks to Westminster again to take on the Carroll County Shooting Stars at 7 p.m. March 16 at Western Maryland College.

The game is the Tourism Council's only fund-raiser, said Steve Kerkam, president.

The Wizards, a team featuring former NBA and college stars, will take on a squad of local basketball enthusiasts, several from area recreational teams.

Coming back as the Wizards' on-court jester is crowd favorite James "Speedy" Williams, who appeared in the movie Above the Rim. Williams keeps the game moving and the opponents on their toes with his never-ending chatter and slapstick.

In addition to being the fifth annual game in Carroll County, the Wizards are celebrating the team's 40th anniversary this year. The team was founded in 1962 by the late Howie Davis, a New York-based sports promoter, manager and entrepreneur.

The Wizards, now managed by Davis' son Todd, have not lost a game since 1991, when they were narrowly defeated by a Lithuanian national championship team. But rarely does the team play basketball just for the sake of winning.

The Wizards have helped thousands of organizations, schools and clubs raise funds for projects.

Before the game at WMC, members of the Wizards will take their court antics to TownMall of Westminster, where they will shoot, dunk and play games with audience members.

The free show, part of the entertainment for Carroll County Chamber of Commerce's SpringFest Business Fair, will start at 3 p.m. near the mall's food court. Tickets will be available at TownMall before the Wizards exhibition.

Advance tickets for the benefit shootout are $6. Children ages 4 and younger will be admitted free. Tickets are available at Best Western; Boston Inn; Carroll County Regional Airport; Jubilee Foods in Taneytown; Mount Airy Town Hall; the Hampstead office of O'Conor, Piper & Flynn ERA; Rohrbaugh's Tours and Charters; Sylvan Learning Centers; Thunderhead Bowl & Family Fun Center and TownMall of Westminster.

A free autograph session will be held after the contest, and Wizards souvenirs will be available at the game.
