February 24, 2002|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A Howard County police car rear-ended a minivan Thursday night on westbound U.S. 40 near Ridge Road in Ellicott City, Howard police said.

Officer Jeremy Perkins, 30, failed to stop his marked patrol car and hit the rear of a Plymouth Voyager about 7:20 p.m. Thursday, police said. The van was stopped in the far-left lane, police said.

The van's driver, Young Pil Kim, 40, of the 9000 block of Sohap Lane in Columbia, suffered a minor hand injury but refused treatment and did not require hospitalization, police said.

Perkins, who is assigned to the Northern District, was taken to Howard County General Hospital for a checkup - as per protocol - and was released, police said.

The front end of the patrol car was badly damaged, and the vehicle had to be towed from the scene, police said. The van had minor damage to its rear end and was driven from the scene, police said.
