Chinese New Year festival dinner

MARYLAND SCENE

February 24, 2002|By Sloane Brown

About 200 folks capped off a day of celebrating the Chinese New Year -- this year, the Year of the Horse -- by gathering in the Grace and St. Peter's Church parish house dining room for the Chinese Language School's annual Chinese Lunar New Year Festival Dinner.

Guests mingled and snacked on shrimp chips, reviewing the day's events, which had included a mini-parade and the traditional Chinese dragon / lion performance.

One school board trustee went even further back in his reminiscences. Sam Weinblatt pulled out a folder full of yellowed newspaper clippings dating back to 1964, detailing the school's past Chinese New Year celebrations and profiling its founders: Lillian Kim and her late husband, Herman Kim.

Among those at the party: Mary Lee and Fay Lee, event co-chairs; Jeremy Lee, Jessica Lee, Arthur Lee, Raymond Lee and Patrick Hom, event committee members; Lillian Kim, Chinese Language School co-founder / director / boardchair; Chip Collison, Floryne E. Howard and the Rev. Frederick S. Thomas, Chinese Language School board members; Dennis Cabrilla, U.S. Department of Energy nuclear engineer; Floraine Applefeld, Maryland You Are Beautiful director; Robert Zimmerman, Baltimore floral designer / event planner; Nona Porter, Grace and St. Peter's School teacher; Thomas Outlen, Calvary Temple Church pastor; Jeffrey Baus, Legg Mason client service representative; Nathaniel Davis, Chinese History and Cultural Educational Foundation former program coordinator; Mary Beth Haller, Baltimore area attorney; Chong Hu, Baltimore City Community College student; Leona Del Prete, community volunteer; Gretchen Anderson, Parker Advertising marketing manager; and Donna Del Prete, Del Prete Masonry project manager.

The party raised about $3,000 for the Chinese Language School.
