County school board to meet tomorrow in Ellicott City

The Howard County Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the boardroom of the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Both sessions will begin with a public forum, when members of the public can address the board on any topic. Speakers are asked to sign up in advance.

A public meeting to approve the fiscal year 2003 operating and capital budgets and the 2004-2008 Capital Improvement Program will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The board will receive the proposed boundary line adjustments for Pointers Run Elementary School from David Drown, coordinator for geographical systems, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28, also in the boardroom.

Registration scheduled for those new to system

Registration for new students or those entering kindergarten in August will be held in Howard County elementary schools from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through March 1 and at other times designated by individual schools.

State law requires that a child be age 5 on or before Dec. 31, 2002, to enter kindergarten, which is mandatory in Maryland. A child must be 6 on or before that date to enter first grade.

Children should be registered at the school serving the community in which the pupil's parent or guardian lives. A birth certificate and other documents are required at the time of registration.

Educator to speak Feb. 28 at CAP Project meeting

Sandy Queen, an educator, mother and grandmother, will be the keynote speaker for the CAP (Children Achieving Power) Project at Burleigh Manor Middle School at 7 p.m. Feb. 28.

Queen will discuss parents' practices and roles with adolescent children.

Leadership U session set for students and parents

Parents and students are invited to attend an information session about Leadership U, a student program under the auspices of Leadership Howard County, at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 28 at Humanim (formerly DSG), 6355 Woodside Court, Columbia.
