Postcard from SALT LAKE CITY

February 16, 2002|By Candus Thomson

One of the hottest souvenirs in town is walking off the streets. For some reason, tourists are taken with the Day-Glo orange pedestrian safety flags with "Property of Salt Lake City Corp." stenciled on them.

At 67 crosswalks around town that don't have traffic lights, pedestrians can pick up a plastic flag from a basket on one side of the street, cross and deposit it in a basket on the other side. Cars actually stop for the flag bearers.

The pilfering has taken on Olympic proportions. The flags have been seen on hotel balconies, at bars, and along the snowy slopes of venues. Tourists say that in addition to stopping traffic, they're a dandy way to flag down friends in a crowd.
