Police arrest truck driver in sex assaults

February 15, 2002|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

A 43-year-old truck driver from Edgewood was being held without bail in the Harford County Detention Center last night after his arrest on charges of sexually assaulting three young girls, officials said.

David Kanelopoulos of the 1000 block of E. Spring Meadow Drive was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts each of second-degree sex offense and child abuse, said Sgt. Keith Warner, a sheriff's office spokesman.

Since Kanelopoulos' arrest, three more girls have told police they were assaulted. All six girls are friends and live in Harford County, Warner said.

Kanelopoulos is accused of committing sex offenses involving the girls - ages 9 to 12 - in his home and car at least 100 times during the past several years, Warner said.

Kanelopoulos formerly lived in Rockville and in the Nottingham section of Baltimore County, and traveled the East Coast as a truck driver.

The case was reported to the sheriff's office this week, after one of the girls told a friend who alerted a school guidance counselor.

The sheriff's office asked anyone with information to call the Harford County Child Advocacy Center at 410-638-3294 or 410- 879-2491.
