Run for Life to be held Sunday in Taneytown

Carroll County Pregnancy Center will sponsor a Run for Life fund-raiser Sunday in Taneytown.

Registration will begin at 11:45 a.m., with a 5-kilometer run starting at 1 p.m. A half-mile fun run for the elderly, young or short-distance runners will be available. The run will start and end at Baltimore and York streets.

Entry fee is $10 per runner or $20 for a family. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in three age groups. Certificates and other prizes will be awarded to all runners.

Proceeds benefit the Pregnancy Center, a nonprofit charitable organization providing pregnancy testing and counseling to needy women, along with shelter, medical assistance and infant supplies. The center depends solely on donations.

Pancake breakfast Sunday in Union Bridge

Union Bridge Fire Company will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at the fire hall.

The menu includes sausage and sausage gravy, pudding and hominy, home fries, scrambled eggs, baked apples, biscuits, muffins, juice and coffee.

The cost is $5; $2 for children ages 6 to 12; and younger than age 5 eat for free.

The fire hall is at 8 W. Locust St.

Benefit dance Saturday for Taneytown firefighter

Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company will hold a benefit dance for one of its members at 9 p.m. Saturday at the activities building at Memorial Park.

Taneytown firefighter Perry Lee Petry learned last summer that he had pancreatitis and was unable to work from Aug. 23 to Jan. 2. He had surgery in November.

He needs help with medical bills.

Singer Ashley Marie and her band are donating their time to perform at the dance. Soda and snacks will be served but the dance is BYOB.

Ash Wednesday service set at Strawbridge church

Strawbridge United Methodist Church will hold a community Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary.

Participating churches will include St. Paul's UMC of New Windsor, Union Street UMC of Westminster and Westminster UMC.

The Rev. Mary Kay Totty from St. Paul's will preach. All the churches' choirs will sing.

Strawbridge United Methodist is on Route 31 at Wakefield Valley Road.

Taneytown library plans story times, craft program

The Taneytown library branch, 10 Grand Drive, will offer:

Family Story Time for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Adult craft night at 6:30 p.m. today. Participants can take projects.

Drop-in Crafts for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) from 10 a.m. to noon, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

"Bedtime Stories: Monkey Business" for all ages (age 3 and younger with an adult) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Taneytown Book Club for adults at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 to discuss Kate Hannigan's Girl by Catherine Cookson.

District governor visits Sulphur Spring Lions

Sulphur Springs Lions Club of New Windsor recently welcomed District 22W Gov. Cecil Massie to its monthly meeting.

Massie, from Union Bridge, spoke to the members and guests, reminding them of the club's motto, "We Serve."

The club meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at St. Luke's (Winter's) Church between New Windsor and Union Bridge.

St. Paul's United Methodist: The church men will hold an Ark CafM-i Sunday after worship to support the church's mission work. Lenten Bible study this season will be based on Handel's Messiah. The Biblical text used in the Messiah will be studied from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays Feb. 17 to March 24. Registration is required through the church office. The next Book Club meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 to discuss Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Church school is at 9 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday.
