Sophomores wanted for training program in how to be a leader

Leadership U, a student program under the auspices of Leadership Howard County, is recruiting its seventh class. The program prepares students to be effective community leaders.

The program begins with a one-week training experience in team building. Tuition is $400. Scholarships are available; applications must be returned by March 15.

Deadline extended for student exchange

The deadline to apply for the Columbia Association Sister Cities Program's 2002 High School Student Exchange has been extended to Feb. 28.

Participating students will spend about two weeks during the summer in one of Columbia's sister cities - Cergy-Pontoise, France or Tres Cantos, Spain - with the family of a French or Spanish student.

Nominations being taken for school board award

The Howard County Board of Education is accepting nominations for its Friends of Education Award to honor people, businesses or organizations for contributing to the school system's mission of excellence in learning.

Any Howard County resident or any group, organization or business in or serving the county may be nominated. Nominations should be returned by Feb. 15 to the executive assistant to the Board of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City 21042.

2 work sessions planned on county schools budget

The Howard County Board of Education will continue its public work sessions on the superintendent's proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2003 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Feb. 19 in the board room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Preparation course offered for SAT, PSAT

Chapelgate Christian Academy, 2600 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, will offer an SAT and PSAT preparation course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 23 and March 2.

Tuition is $100, plus $40 for materials. A portion of the tuition will go to the school. Registration is open to all high school students.

Visual, performing arts instructors being sought

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks Senior Adult Program Section is accepting resumes and class proposals from instructors to teach visual and performing arts to senior citizens in the spring or fall.
