American Legion Ladies Auxiliary to hold benefit Sweetheart Dance

American Legion Post 223 Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Sweetheart Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the post home in Sykesville.

The band 4our By 4our will provide music. A light buffet will be served and a cash bar will be available, as will beer, wine and soda.

Door prizes will be awarded, among them gift certificates to local restaurants and florists, and for tax preparation.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary's programs for veterans and local charities.

Shorinjiryu karate classes are offered for all ages

Ake No Myojo Budo (Morning Star Martial Arts), sponsored by Sykesville Parks and Recreation, holds continuing classes in Shorinjiryu karate weekdays at Sykesville Middle School.

Classes are held at 6:15 p.m. for parents and peewees (ages 5 to 7 with parents) and 7 p.m. for adults and all other ages Mondays and Wednesdays.

Weekend classes will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and will be offered in Carrolltown Center's Community Room.

St. Barnabas' to serve Shrove Tuesday pancakes

St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church will hold its 41st annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day on Feb. 12 in the Parish House at 7609 Main St. in Sykesville.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The menu will include plain and blueberry pancakes, cinnamon applesauce, country sausage, homemade pancake syrup and beverages.

Homemade baked goods, sesquicentennial mugs and St. Barnabas' cookbook of recipes will be sold.

The cost for a pancake platter will be $5 and $2.50 for children ages 3 to 12. Toddlers will eat for free.

Basket bingo to help send dance team to competition

The Sykesville Raiders Competition Squad All-Star Dance Team will hold basket bingo Feb. 15 at St. Joseph's Church in Eldersburg.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and games will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and include a set of cards for 20 games. All baskets are filled.

Light dinner and snacks will be available. The church is at 915 Liberty Road.

This fund-raiser will help pay for the team to attend the Eastern Dance Association National Competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

County children's fair seeks vendors to participate

Carrolltown Center is seeking vendors with child-related products and services to participate in the seventh annual Carroll County Children's Fair.

Maryland Public Television personality Bob the Vid Tech will serve as host of the fair, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the mall in Eldersburg.

The event will include entertainment, story time and giveaways.

Vendors will receive one covered 8-foot table and two chairs, and will be included event advertising.

The vendor application deadline is Feb. 15.

Library offers book club, writers circle for teens

The Eldersburg library branch, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, is offering these activities:

Eldersburg Book Club for adults at 2 p.m. Saturday to discuss The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende.

Writers Circle, a creative writing club for ages 11 to 17, at 7 p.m. Monday.
