Icelandair offering `Honeymoon Express' at the airport

For couples interested in marrying on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, and heading off on a Scandinavian honeymoon, Icelandair is offering its "Honeymoon Express" at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

BWI is staging a preflight champagne reception for the couples and their relatives and friends at 5 p.m., next to the Icelandair ticket counter. During the reception, Robert P. Duckworth, clerk of the court for Anne Arundel County, will officiate at the marriage ceremony.

Flight FI642 will depart from BWI to Reykjavik, Iceland. A fare of $299 a couple includes the round-trip flight, two nights at Icelandair's Hotel Loftleidir in Reykjavik with breakfast buffet, a trek across the lava fields on Icelandic horses and a dip in the famed Blue Lagoon.

The five-hour trans-Atlantic flight departs BWI at 8:15 p.m., and arrives in Iceland at 6:50 a.m. Friday morning. The return flight is Feb. 17.

Couples must get their tickets at the airport Feb. 14 after presenting valid passports and a certified marriage license. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. Passengers must arrive at BWI at least three hours before departure for the special ticketing and check-in procedures.

Garage SmartPark System is scheduled for expansion

The BWI SmartPark System, which makes finding a parking spot at the airport quicker and easier, is being expanded to the rest of the terminal garage.

A limited version of the automated parking guidance system, which uses sensors above each parking space to relay information on space availability, was installed on the second floor as an experiment and deemed a success. Electronic signs, at the ends of each parking row, display the number of spaces available in each aisle. Green arrows direct customers to lanes with vacant spaces, and red X's warn them away.

The system allows for 100 percent capacity. Now, the garage is closed at 85 percent capacity to provide a reasonable search time for customers.

The expanded installation will begin at the end of this year or early next year.

Re-striping to close a lane on Elm Road, starting Feb. 11

One lane of Elm Road at a time will be closed to re-stripe the roadway from Feb. 11 through Feb. 15, weather permitting.

Elm Road is used to reach the Sheraton International Hotel and to return rental cars to the airport. The lane will close from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
