Republican Adler announces for county executive

February 01, 2002|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Standing before his family and a crowd of Republican officials, candidates and supporters in Savage Mill's Great Room, Steven H. Adler formally declared his candidacy for Howard County executive yesterday.

With former County Executive Charles I. Ecker, U.S. Rep. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Howard County Council members Allan H. Kittleman and Christopher J. Merdon in the audience, Adler made it official.

Adler said he expects to lead a "unified Republican effort to regain control of Howard County government."

He said there will be no personal attacks on County Executive James N. Robey, the Democratic incumbent, but Adler said he believes he "can do better" in gauging revenues to keep the budget balanced, in speeding projects such as the revitalization of U.S. 1 and in "speaking up" about important issues.

Also, yesterday, Robey named William "Ned" Eakle as his campaign manager. Eakle is a former county administrative officer who served as county executive in 1986 when J. Hugh Nichols resigned before his second term ended.
