Education forum with state board planned for Thursday

The Carroll County Board of Education will sponsor a public forum with the State Board of Education at 7 p.m. Thursday at Liberty High School in Eldersburg.

Residents are welcome to express their views on such issues as full-day kindergarten, early intervention and high school assessment.

Other topics include the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program, achievement among minority students, state funding of schools (including recommendations by the Thornton Commission) and the shortage of teachers.

The state board also is seeking input on its efforts to improve students' academic achievement, especially African-American students.

Achievement among students from low-income families will also be discussed.

Individuals wishing to speak may register at Liberty High between 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Speakers will be called in order of registration.

Speakers will have three minutes in which to address matters that relate to the state school board's agenda or to policy matters over which the board has jurisdiction.

Liberty High School is at 5855 Bartholow Road.
