Lane closures begin for Bay Bridge work

January 23, 2002

The center lane of the westbound span of the Bay Bridge is scheduled to be closed starting tonight as part of a four-year construction project. Beginning tomorrow, the eastbound span will be closed from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. weekdays, state transportation officials said.

Because some wide vehicles won't be able to travel across the westbound span with the center lane closed, the 30-minute closure will allow vehicles more than 10 feet wide to travel across the eastbound span. The closure is expected to cause delays, but authorities said they chose 9 a.m. as the closing time because traffic typically drops immediately after the morning rush hour.

The center lane on the westbound span is to be closed daily through April 15, excluding Easter weekend. Information about the $45 million deck rehabilitation is available by calling 1-877-229-7726 or on the Web site www.
