WINE OF THE WEEK

January 23, 2002|By Michael Dresser

2001 New Gewurz, Alexander Valley Vineyards ($9). This is the white-wine equivalent of a Beaujolais Nouveau, only superior in quality. The key is freshness, not complexity. This infant gewurztraminer offers plenty of lively fruit in an off-dry style. It's suitable for serving with spicy Asian cuisine or as a warm-up to more thought-provoking wines. Alexander Valley Vineyards needn't be so ashamed of this wine that it puts its name on the back label. It isn't a classic, but there's a place in this world for fresh, young wine.
