Deputy fire chief to be acting chief for inspections, permits

Anne Arundel County Deputy Fire Chief Robert Ray will serve as acting director of inspections and permits starting next month, a county spokesman announced.

Ray has worked for the county fire department for 24 years. For 11 years, he has administered the department's fire investigation and code enforcement division.

Ray, 46, completed a program for local government administrators at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government last summer.

"Chief Ray's experience with code enforcement, life safety, budgets and administration make him the ideal person to continue the process of streamlining the permitting and enforcement processes," County Executive Janet S. Owens said Friday in a statement announcing Ray's appointment.

Ray will replace acting Director James Pittman, who will return to his former position as deputy director of the Department of Public Works. Pittman stepped in temporarily when Owens promoted former Director of Inspection and Permits Walter Chitwood to assistant chief administrative officer.

County Council to discuss development, other issues

The Anne Arundel County Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Arundel Center, 44 Calvert St., Annapolis, to discuss a development plan for the Lee Airport in Edgewater and other issues.

Also on the council agenda are legislation that would slightly change the boundaries of council districts and a bill that would protect bogs.
