School board plans meetings on operating budget

The Board of Education will hold a series of public meetings to present and take comments on the operating budget for the public school system for the 2002-2003 school year.

Meetings will be held at:

1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster. Superintendent Charles I. Ecker will present the proposed budget to the Board of Education.

A work session on the Math Commission Report and the Pupil Services Annual Report will be held at 2 p.m.

7 p.m. Jan. 29 at Runnymede Elementary School, 3000 Langdon Drive, near Taneytown. The proposed budget will be presented.

7 p.m. Feb. 5 at Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road, near Winfield. The proposed budget will be presented.

7 p.m. Feb. 27 at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road. The Board of Education will present and adopt the proposed budget.

Parents invited to seminar on educational concerns

Members of the Carroll County delegation are sponsoring a MSPAP & Maryland Education Summit from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday at Century High School near Winfield.

"Empowerment for Parents" will focus on the concerns being raised about Maryland's education system. Participants will identify concerns and discuss solutions.

Parents will learn about proposals to improve educational opportunity for children.

Topics to be discussed include: federal education reform initiatives, understanding MSPAP (the Maryland State Performance Assessment Program), principles of education reform, and increasing educational options for America's children. Federal, state and local officials will speak.

Participants also may attend one of six breakout sessions: understanding student/teacher/school evaluations; evaluating Maryland curriculum standards; understanding parent-school relationships; characteristics of an appropriate school environment; opportunities for beneficial partnerships between public schools and private industry; and increasing educational options for children.

The summit is sponsored by state Sens. Larry E. Haines and Timothy R. Ferguson, and Dels. Carmen Amedori, Donald B. Elliott, Joseph M. Getty, Nancy R. Stocksdale and Janet Greenip.

Community college hires financial aid coordinator

Lloyd King has joined the staff of Carroll Community College as financial aid coordinator.

King has a doctorate in theology from Andersonville Baptist Theological Seminary in Camilla, Ga., a master's from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., and a bachelor's in flight technology and aviation law from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Earlier, King was the Maryland Higher Education Commission's program administrator for numerous scholarship awards.

He also was an aircraft maintenance officer and helicopter pilot in the military and a Baptist minister. He lives in New Windsor.

Scholarships for 2002-2003 offered by Long & Foster

Long & Foster Real Estate will offer the Long & Foster $100,000 Scholarship Program for graduating high school seniors entering an accredited four-year college or university.

The program will award $1,000 to each of 100 students in the five-state region for the 2002- 2003 academic year. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college or university in the student's name.

The application deadline is March 1, and scholarships will be awarded beginning May 1.

Eligible high school seniors must have a grade point average of at least 3.0. They also must demonstrate financial need, indicate positions of leadership they have held, describe activities in school groups and community organizations, and note whether they have held a part-time job while in school.
