Scholarship program deadline is March 1

Long & Foster Real Estate Inc.'s annual scholarship program for graduating high school seniors ends this year on March 1.

The real estate company will award $1,000 to each of 100 recipients throughout the mid-Atlantic region for the 2002-2003 academic year. The monetary award is paid directly to the college or university in the student's name. Awards will be disbursed starting May 1.

Criteria include school and extracurricular involvement, demonstrated financial need, work experience, SAT scores and a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Other requirements include an essay, a letter of recommendation and an official copy of a high school transcript. Applications can be found at a Long & Foster sales office, online at www.longand, or by calling 800-237-8800.


Tuesday: Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education will offer the 60-hour course required to take the state's real estate licensing exam. The course will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., until April 4. Call: Cynthia Hull, 301-790-2800, Ext. 520.

Wednesday: Long & Foster Real Estate Inc. will hold a "Career in Real Estate" seminar at its Fort Meade/Odenton office, 6:30 p.m. Call: 301-621-9676.

Jan. 29: The Eastern Baltimore Area Chamber of Commerce is holding a homebuyer workshop. Attendance at one of the workshops is required to participate in the Baltimore County Settlement Expense Loan Program or the state's low-interest-rate mortgage program. Time: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Call: 410-282-9100.

Feb. 15: The St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center in Baltimore has a free workshop for first-time homebuyers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration required. Call: 410-366-8550.
