COLLEGE PARK - Maryland gave up 25 points on turnovers and did not score a point during the final 5:19 as a young Virginia team took a 52-44 Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball victory last night at Cole Field House.

The Cavaliers (10-7, 3-3 ACC) destroyed the Terrapins' zone early in the first half when 5-foot-10 sophomore guard Anna Prillaman nailed five straight three-pointers, all from the corners and all on feeds from senior point guard Telisha Quarles. Prillaman's final three, with 12:51 left, gave the Cavaliers a 41-38 lead.

Although the Terps stayed within striking distance, they could do no better than tie, at 44 when Renneika Razor grabbed a loose ball under the Terps basket and converted. After that, Virginia slowly pulled away.

Maryland's starting forwards, 6-foot-2 Deedee Warley and 6-3 Rosita Melbourne, who average 20.5 points between them, did not score a single point. Warley got into foul trouble early, sitting with two fouls less than five minutes into the game.

"I have to make some big lineup changes," said Maryland coach Chris Weller, "because some of our starters are really struggling. When you don't have a threat inside, it's really hard to get any guards open."

With 4:18 left, Cavaliers 6-foot freshman center Brandi Teamer hit a turnaround jumper and Quarles drove for a layup to put Virginia up 48-44.

The Terps (9-8, 2-4) got 18 points from Marche Strickland, but 15 of them came in the first half, and they also committed 21 turnovers.
