Navy generally has had Lehigh's number during their time together in the Patriot League, but last night the Midshipmen had to give a little extra effort to get the win.

In a Patriot League game punctuated by excessive fouling and turnovers, Navy persevered through double overtime for a 92-85 victory, its 15th in the past 16 meetings with Lehigh.

Navy, which had been off to its worst start since 1992-93, is 36-7 against the Mountain Hawks.

Ra Tiah hit a three-pointer for Lehigh with two seconds left in the first extra period to send the game into the second overtime after Demond Shepard had given Navy a three-point edge with 15.5 seconds left with a drive down the lane.

In the second overtime, the Mountain Hawks took the first lead on a free throw by Scott Taylor, but never led again after their big man, Matt Crawford, fouled out with 3:38 remaining.

Two foul shots by Francis Ebong gave Navy (7-11, 2-1) an 85-84 edge and after a Lehigh turnover, Jehiel Lewis scored on a drive to push the lead to three.

The Midshipmen then stashed away their fourth victory in the past five home games at the line, with Ebong hitting one more free throw and Kyle Barker and Lewis (game high 21 points) adding two apiece.

"It was a hard-fought one that could have gone either way," Navy coach Don Devoe said. "With American losing at home [to Lafayette], everybody in the league now has a defeat.

"You have to hold home turf in this league because road wins will be tough. What we have to do is mature and find a way to win away from here."

Jason Jeanpierre added 19 points for the Midshipmen, who are tied for first in the league with three other teams.

Lehigh (4-12, 1-2) went 0-for-7 from the field in the second overtime in a game that encompassed 58 personal fouls, 56 turnovers, 87 rebounds and numerous timeouts because it was televised back to the Lehigh Valley.

Four players scored in double figures for the Mountain Hawks, who were missing the top shot-blocker in the league, Eric Heil, who suffered an eye injury two games earlier.

Navy had an 11-point cushion early in the second half, but Lehigh fought back and assumed a five-point lead at 70-65 with five minutes left in regulation.

Tiah, a sophomore point guard, scored on a tip-in for a 74-73 Mountain Hawk lead and Lewis, the Patriot League Player of the Week last week, hit only the first of two free throws to tie it.

Tiah also had the last attempt in regulation, but he missed a jumper with two seconds left. Navy could not get off a shot in the remaining time.
