WINE OF THE WEEK

1999 Chateau Souverain Merlot, Alexander Valley ($17). This lush, concentrated merlot is one of the most successful I have tasted in recent years. It offers deep purple-black color, black-cherry, cassis, coffee and chocolate flavors and impressive intensity. Its smooth texture gives it sensual appeal, and the layers of rich fruit give it complexity seldom found at this price. It should cellar well for five years or more, but it's quite charming now. Serve with robust red-meat dishes.
