Health Department offers training for safety technicians

The Carroll County Health Department will sponsor a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician training course next month.

Classes will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 5-7 and Feb. 9 at the Sykesville-Freedom District fire hall, Route 32 at Freedom Avenue. (Feb. 8 is an inclement weather date.)

The final class will be a car seat check at Jeff Barnes Chevrolet and Oldsmobile in Eldersburg.

Participants must attend all four days to obtain technician status.

Red Cross offers CPR and first aid classes

The American Red Cross is offering cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid classes around the county.

Classes are given at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (GELC), 21 Carroll St., Westminster, and at Westminster Senior Center (WSC), 125 Stoner Ave.

Participants must register and pay for classes in advance. Available courses are:

Adult CPR: Classes are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at WSC and Feb. 23 at GELC. The cost is $33.

Standard First Aid: Classes are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23 at GELC. The cost is $37.

Baby Sitter's Training: Youths ages 11 to 15 will learn to interview for a job, react to an emergency or sudden illness, play with children of different ages (infant to primary school age), and supervise children in all aspects of care. The class is 8 1/2 hours and costs $37. Call the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks at 410-386-2103 for dates and locations.

Crime Avoidance Training: This class includes personal security awareness; tough-target strategies; tips for staying safe while walking, driving and using ATMs; and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will teach courses at locations chosen by the class. A minimum of 10 people is required. The cost is $9.95 per person.

Qigong attunement class to be offered Jan. 26

Three Treasures Health Services of Sykesville will offer a winter medical qigong attunement class from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at 7532 Norwood Ave.

Three Treasures owner Frances Gander, a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, will teach the class.

The practice of qigong lessens the effects of stress, leading to better health.

The cost is $60 in advance or $65 the day of class.

Carroll YMCA plans winter fitness classes

The Carroll County Family YMCA is offering winter fitness classes at three locations around the county.

The following classes are held at the YMCA in Westminster through Feb. 23: "Reebok Cycle," "Cardio Blast," "Straight Step," "Muscle Conditioning," "Dance It Off," "Aqua Fit," "Swim Fit," "Waterwalking" and "Kids Can Dance It Off Too!"

The YMCA also offers "Get Real Weight Management," a realistic approach to nutrition. Beginning and advanced yoga classes also are available.

These classes are free to members. Fees for nonmembers are: two times a week, $66; three times a week, $75.

The following classes are being offered at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Eldersburg: "Dance It Off," "Totally Fit," "Muscle Conditioning" and "Get Real Weight Management."

The YMCA also offers "Dance It Off" in the evening at Piney Ridge Elementary.

Fees for the above classes for nonmembers are: two times a week, $58; three times a week, $68; unlimited off-site, $80. Free baby-sitting is available for all morning classes.

Beginning and advanced Hatha yoga classes are offered at Tami Gee's Studio of Dance in Finksburg.

Youth, adult swim classes scheduled at Carroll YMCA

The Carroll County Family YMCA is accepting registrations for Winter Youth and Adult Swimming Lessons.

The YMCA offers a variety of class times and skill levels. New adult offerings include "Fearful Adult Swim," "Adult Stroke Technique" and "Lunch Time Lap Swim."

The YMCA also offers community training in American Red Cross CPR and first aid, and YMCA lifeguard certification courses.

Target donates toys to two units at hospital

The Westminster Target store donated toys to the emergency and pediatric units at Carroll County General Hospital during the holidays.

Target has several programs to give back to the community, and the hospital donation was one such program, said store representative Cynthia Packer.

Receiving the toys were Stacey Storm, Alisa Lubrani, Mari Parker and Kim Alexander, all of the hospital's emergency department.

Five students receive nursing certification

Five graduates of the certified nursing assistant program recently received their certification from Carroll Lutheran Village.

The instructor, Judi Lorch, awarded certificates to Corey Green, Jason Lang, Karen Myers, Amber Porter and Jennifer Watson.
