Small is Sandy Spring COO; 4 others advance

Sandy Spring Bank promoted Frank Small to chief operating officer, a newly created position at the Olney-based bank, and named four other senior managers as executive vice presidents.

As chief operating officer, Small is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of sales, service, and support teams for the bank, which has more than $2 billion in assets, 30 branches and 524 employees. Small, who joined the bank in 1990, retains the title of executive vice president.

Elected executive vice presidents are Lou Caceres, to head the relationship acquisition group; Sara Watkins, to oversee the retail services, administration and planning group; Frank Bentz as chief information officer; and Ronald Kuykendall, who will continue as general counsel and corporate secretary with additional responsibility for the risk management group.

Executive Vice President Lawrence Lewis has also been named chief investment officer and will continue to manage the capital markets group, which has responsibility for asset quality.

Susquehanna promotes Smith, hires Borkowicz

Susquehanna Bank appointed Sheridan Smith senior vice president of retail banking and business development, and hired Joseph E. Borkowicz Sr. as sales coordinator for central Maryland.

Smith, who joined Susquehanna in May, has more than 30 years of banking experience, most recently with Bank of America. He is a member of the board of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Essex Community College Foundation. Borkowicz, a 38-year industry veteran, was manager of the Maryland northeast region for the Bank of America. He is a former chairman of the Baltimore City Municipal Zoning Board.


Schuessler is member of Cardoni Waddell

Cardoni Waddell LLC named Gregory S. Schuessler as a member of the Columbia-based accounting and financial consulting firm. A certified public accountant, he is a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania. He is on the board of the Norbel School and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Howard County General appoints Blackman, Kander

Howard County General Hospital named Jay H. Blackman as senior vice president of operations and appointed Lynn Kander as medical staff coordinator for the hospital, part of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Blackman, who begins his new duties Jan. 28, is currently administrator of the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. A graduate of Bucknell University, he received a master's degree in health administration from Duke University. Kander coordinates the credentialing of the medical staff for the 179-bed institution. She formerly was coordinator at Sinai Hospital.
