Federal funds enable Meals on Wheels to offer 5-day service

OAKLAND - An agency that delivers lunches to homebound senior citizens expects to resume five-day-a-week service as soon as Jan. 7.

The increase in the Meals on Wheels program is being made possible by $25,000 in federal funding for the Area Agency on Aging announced last week by Sens. Barbara A. Mikulski and Paul S. Sarbanes. The money is in the fiscal 2002 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill.

The funding would offset a loss of private grant dollars that forced the agency to cut deliveries from five days to three days a week in October. A series of fund-raisers allowed the service to expand to four days this month.

Sykesville woman claims $9.2 million lottery prize

A Sykesville woman has claimed the $9.2 million prize for the winning Lotto ticket she bought at an Eldersburg food market this month.

The woman, who requested anonymity, is a senior citizen and said she plans to "live happily ever after, of course," Maryland Lottery officials said yesterday. The woman claimed the prize yesterday morning.

She will split the winnings with her son, who at first refused to believe she had won the jackpot, lottery officials said.
