Lauretta Avenue fire critically injures woman
A disabled woman believed to be in her 50s was critically burned yesterday evening in a fire at her West Baltimore home, but her three grandchildren - ages 6 to 12 - escaped without injury, the city Fire Department reported.
Battalion Chief Greg Ward said the fire, reported at 5:19 p.m., burned out the first floor of the two-story rowhouse in the 2700 block of Lauretta Ave. and filled the upper floor with dense smoke. Police said the victim, Christine Wilson, was found unconscious in a second-floor hallway with first- and second-degree burns over her lower body and both arms.
Wilson was in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Muriel Smith, 39, a neighbor, said she tried to get into the house through the rear kitchen door but was stopped by flames and smoke. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Smell of marijuana leads to drug arrests of couple
Firefighters smelled smoke, but marijuana - not a house - was burning, authorities said yesterday in announcing the arrest of a city couple on drug charges.
The firefighters were investigating an apparently unfounded report of an injured person when they noticed the pungent odor in a house in the 2400 block of Ridgely St. in the Mount Winans neighborhood and notified police.
After obtaining a warrant, officers searched the house and reported seizing 14 quarter-ounce bags of marijuana, scales, a handgun and $72 in cash. Charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute were Anthony and Angela Farrare, 41 and 39, respectively.
Kennedy Krieger Institute to get $1.7 million grant
The Kennedy Krieger Institute will receive a $1.7 million federal grant to purchase advanced computer technology to help teach disabled students in the state, Rep. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., announced yesterday.
The money will be used to purchase hardware and software that Kennedy Krieger - which serves children with brain disorders and their families - can use to expand its curricula and reach more students through distance learning.
"Students from across Maryland will soon reap the benefits of this important program," said Ehrlich, the 2nd District Republican who was involved in securing the grant. The money was part of the fiscal year 2002 Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriation Act.
East Baltimore Christmas celebrates Polish tradition
The annual East Baltimore Christmas - a Polish holiday celebration of door-to-door caroling usually accompanied by musicians in horse-drawn carts - is planned for 7 p.m. Sunday, starting outside the Polish Home Club at 510 S. Broadway.
Revived in the neighborhood in 1971, the celebration is based on an old-country tradition in which friends and relatives convene and travel from village to village and farm to farm, spreading the joys of the holiday season.
Traditional holiday carols, some in Polish, will be sung in the procession through Highlandtown, Canton and Fells Point, which is to take place regardless of the weather. The event is sponsored by local businesses, and the public is welcome.
