Siragusa remark angers Pittsburgh

Raven says he was joking about their fans at PSINet

December 15, 2001|By Jamison Hensley

An apparent joke by Ravens defensive tackle Tony Siragusa has caused a stir in Pittsburgh.

When asked about the numerous Steelers fans that make their way into PSINet Stadium, Siragusa said on Wednesday, "My suggestion is if you see someone with black and gold on, follow them in the bathroom and take care of business yourself. There's no cameras in the bathroom."

The comment was used by Pittsburgh newspapers and radio stations, and Siragusa has come under heavy criticism in a city where he played his college career. Siragusa was surprised when told that fans took him literally.

"You can't be serious," Siragusa said yesterday. "I was kidding."

Said Ravens vice president of public relations Kevin Byrne: "It was clear that Goose was joking with reporters. Shame on any of them [reporters] who used his words publicly."
