Trust distributes $8.4 million to 4 colleges

The Johns Hopkins University and three independent Maryland colleges picked up checks yesterday totaling $8.4 million from the Hodson Trust, a charity established by the family of Clarence Hodson, founder of the Beneficial Corp. financial services firm.

Hopkins, Washington College in Chestertown and Hood College in Frederick each received about $2.4 million, while St. John's College in Annapolis was awarded about $1.1 million.

The money is used for scholarships, student internships, faculty chairs, endowments, research and large construction projects.
