Chamber planning membership meeting, tree-lighting event

The Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce will hold its general membership meeting Thursday at the Chartwell Country Club, 1 Chartwell Drive, Severna Park, and its annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Friday at 1 Holly Ave.

The membership meeting will begin with registration and a social hour at 11 a.m., followed by buffet luncheon at noon. Speaker Vic Bernson, a new Defense Department appointee, will discuss President Bush's plans and initiatives to "jump start" the economy and win the war against terrorism.

The cost is $23 for members and $28 for nonmembers. RSVP by tomorrow at 410-647-3900.

The tree-lighting ceremony will feature bagpipe music at 5 p.m. and music by the Severna Park Elementary School Chorus at 5:30 p.m. "Rockfish," the Severna Park United Methodist Church Praise Band, will also perform.

Refreshments will be served in the chamber's community meeting room. Trains from the Severna Park Model Railroad Club will be on display from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Information: 410-647-3900.

High-Technology Council seeking award nominees

The Anne Arundel County High-Technology Council, a nonprofit organization working to increase county-based high-technology business opportunities, is seeking nominations for its first "TechIE Awards" for industry excellence.

Categories include business of the year, innovation of the year and academic program of the year. A leadership award will be given.

People

Receives award: The American Red Cross presented county resident Charles Miller with the G. Wendel Heineman Award at the Central Maryland Chapter's annual volunteer recognition event Nov. 12. Miller, who is a county disaster action team responder, helped the Red Cross alert the Maryland Emergency Management Agency about the tunnel fire in Baltimore. He also helped after the fire in McCulloh Homes apartments.
