Fire Administration, safety committee offers advice for seniors

The Carroll County Prevention and Life Safety Committee is joining the U.S. Fire Administration to help reduce fire deaths among older Americans.

The committee, part of the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association, is making available to 14 county fire halls and five county senior centers a brochure, "Fire Safety Checklist for Older Consumers."

"Seniors over the age of 65 are at greater risk of death from fire than any other age group in the United States," said Debbie Gartrell-Kemp, committee chairwoman.

Fire Administration figures indicate that the fire-death rate among people age 65 to 75 is twice the national average; for those age 75 to 85, the figure is three times the average. People over age 85 suffer four times the average fire-death rate.

The committee urges seniors to follow safety procedures:

Install smoke alarms on every level of the home.

Plan and practice escape routes.

Never smoke in bed or leave smoking materials unattended.

Do not leave food unattended on the stove or wear loose clothing while cooking.

Learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

Have the electrical wiring in the home professionally inspected at least every 10 years.

These tips are detailed in the fire-safety checklist.

Seniors can call their community fire hall for information about fire safety.
