Variety of holiday music at W. Md. College

Concerts: Classical favorites, a jazz program, guitar and string ensembles and an electric bass group are slated for performances this month.

Western Maryland College student musicians are gearing up for the holiday concert season, beginning with the chamber music ensembles at 7 p.m. tomorrow in (Little) Baker Chapel.

Featured will be the WMC flute choir, woodwind quintet and flute quartet. WMC music lecturer Norma Hooks also will perform.

Students Nicole Novotny, Jeannette Prante and Fallon Bauer will be flute soloists on Corelli's Christmas Concerto. The program includes selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, folk music, transcriptions for all three groups and original music for the woodwind quintet.

The second concert will feature WMC's saxophone and clarinet ensembles at 7 p.m. Nov. 26 in Levine Recital Hall. The three-member sax group will emphasize a jazz-flavored program, including selections from the Pink Panther movies, modern harmonies and the music of Sammy Nestico.

The clarinets will perform a program that includes Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 4 and a trio by Bouffil.

The student guitar and string ensembles will perform at 7 p.m. Nov. 27, in (Little) Baker Chapel. The concert features the jazz guitar ensemble, classical guitar ensemble, WMC string ensemble and WMC electric bass ensemble.

The jazz guitarists will perform "How Insensitive," "The Girl From Ipanema," "Some Children See Him" and "Henniger Flats." The classical guitar and string ensembles will perform a variety of classical and contemporary works.

The guitar program includes "Ronde" by Susato; "Sarabande" and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach; "Lady Maisry" by Duarte; and "Ponteio" by Machado. The string program includes a minuet by Mozart and the Concerto in A Minor by Vivaldi. The string ensemble concertmistress is WMC student Sally Penner. Both groups include community musicians.

The electric bass ensemble will perform a collection of works by Bo Eckard, WMC jazz director and music lecturer.
