School board president to head education group

November 15, 2001

Raymond V. "Buzz" Bartlett, president of the state school board, will become president and chief executive officer of the Council for Basic Education next year.

The nonprofit education reform group, based in Washington, announced the election yesterday. He will take office Jan. 16.

Bartlett, who is retiring as director of corporate affairs at Lockheed Martin, will follow Christopher T. Cross, Maryland school board president from 1994 to 1997. Cross announced in June that he was retiring after leading the council for more than seven years.
