BOYS

Izudin Mehmedovic

Oakland Mills, cross country

The 5-foot-8, 135-pound runner, nicknamed "The Bosnian Flash," won his second straight Class 1A state title with a time of 16:33.04 over a the 3-mile course at Hereford. Mehmedovic, who is also called, "Izzy," finished a full 34 seconds and nearly 200 yards ahead of the second-place runner from Loch Raven. Mehmedovic also led the Scorpions to their third straight overall crown after winning their fifth straight regional title.

Mehmedovic is 2-1 this year against 4A state champion Pat Bailey of C. Milton Wright, and is 3-2 lifetime against 3A state champion Shane Stroup of River Hill. An All-Metro selection both in cross country and track, the senior is considering Auburn and Maryland among his choices for college.

GIRLS

Karrie Moore

Bryn Mawr, field hockey

The senior goalie made 12 saves to preserve the No. 3 Mawrtians' fifth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship after a 0-0 draw with No. 4 St. Paul's.

Moore, who made three saves in overtime against St. Paul's, finished the four-game tournament with 26 saves. She saved eight shots in a 1-0 semifinal victory over No. 12 Roland Park, including a spectacular deflection on a high, arcing shot that appeared headed just under the top of the cage. A member of Team Maryland, Moore has notched 15 shutouts this season while allowing just seven goals.

Also a lacrosse goalie, Moore carries a B-plus grade-point average and has applied early decision to Penn, where she plans to play lacrosse.
