Low-impact exercise class is starting today

The Long Reach Community Association will offer a new, low-impact exercise class, "Cipher Kinetics," from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, today through Dec. 18. The program uses continuous circular movements to burn calories and improve balance, flexibility and coordination.

The cost is $44 for six weeks, with a 5 percent discount for those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

A new session of "Body Harmony," an exercise program that incorporates yoga, tai-chi, stretching and meditation, will be offered from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 27 through Jan. 29.

A class for children ages 4 to 6, "Kinder Body Harmony," will be held from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 29 through Jan. 31.

Both classes cost $59 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

Birds, book illustration topics slated at library

The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will present "Birds Take Vacations, Too!" a program for children ages 5 to 8 on bird migration, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Children's book illustrator and author Chris Soentpiet will speak at 7 p.m. Monday at the library. He has illustrated 14 books, including Molly Bannaky, More Than Anything Else, Peacebound Trains and Around Town, for which he wrote the text.

Friday is bingo night in Kings Contrivance

The Kings Contrivance Community Association, 7251 Eden Brook Drive, will hold a Family Fun Bingo Night from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

Cards are $1 for eight; sodas are 50 cents and snacks are free. Participants should bring dollar bills and quarters.

Entertainment Book discounts available

Oakland Mills Community Association is raising funds by selling Entertainment Books. The books contain two-for-one discounts for restaurants, movies, sports events and hotels.

The Washington edition costs $35; the Baltimore edition, $25. Part of the proceeds will help pay for community activities. The books are available at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center.

Military

Completes training: Marine Reserve Pfc. Melissa K. Pearson, daughter of Betty Ann and Dallas L. Pearson of Owen Brown, has completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. She is a 1998 graduate of Oakland Mills High School.
