Real estate firm earns recognition for philanthropy

Manekin LLC has received the Maryland Business Philanthropy Award in the medium business category (101 to 500 employees) for its commitment to improving the quality of life in Maryland.

The Columbia commercial real estate firm contributed 20 percent of its net income to nonprofit entities last year. Manekin donated $307,108 to United Way and contributed $53,478 in donations to Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity during the Day of Caring.

Physicians' House Calls gets loan from Rouse fund

Columbia-based Physicians' House Calls, a company providing outpatient home visits and medical services to homebound elderly and assisted-living residents, has received a $70,000 loan from the Jim Rouse Entrepreneurial Fund (JREF), a private, not-for-profit organization assisting small and emerging businesses and creating jobs in Howard County.

Founded in March last year by Dr. Jeffrey Katz, the organization treats about 250 homebound patients a year in Central Maryland.
