Ousted priest allowed to stay in rectory until end of month

A federal judge has agreed to allow the ousted rector of a Prince George's County Episcopal parish to remain with his family in the rectory until the end of the month.

U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte had ordered the Rev. Samuel L. Edwards to move out of the rectory at Christ Church in Accokeek by yesterday. Messitte ruled last week in favor of acting Bishop Jane Holmes Dixon of Washington, who filed suit seeking the court's help in enforcing her decision not to confirm Edwards' hiring as rector by the church's vestry.

Charles H. Nalls, attorney for Edwards and the Christ Church vestry, said the agreement had been reached in principle during a hearing Monday and was signed by the judge yesterday. Messitte has not ruled on an appeal of his ruling filed by Edwards and the vestry.
