Coppin State

Coach: Fang Mitchell, 16th season at Coppin (269-172) Affiliation: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference 2000-01 record: 13-15 (11-8 MEAC) Radio: None Arena: Coppin Center (1,720) Consensus MEAC favorite: South Carolina State Consensus Coppin prediction: 4th Starters lost: 1 Outlook: With leading scorer Joe Brown gone from a team that lost more conference games than any Eagles team since 1987-88, Mitchell is wondering where all the points will come from. And injuries and some disciplinary action have slowed preseason practice. But the Eagles' usual sticky defense and Mitchell's emphasis on fundamentals should have them in the thick of the MEAC chase.

Coach: Scott Hicks, 2nd season at Loyola (6-23), 10th overall (137-118) Affiliation: Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 2000-01 record: 6-23 (2-16 MAAC) Radio: WWLG (1360 AM) Arena: Reitz Arena (3,000) Consensus MAAC favorite: Iona Consensus Loyola prediction: 8th Starters lost: 3 Outlook: Except for the returning backcourt of Damien Jenifer and B.J. Davis, the Greyhounds' roster is practically all new. Starting positions are wide-open, and as many as three freshmen could find spots in the lineup, including promising 6-foot-10 center Irakli Nijaradze, who comes to Baltimore from the Republic of Georgia. This is a rebuilding team that should improve as the season grinds on.

Coach: Tom Sullivan, 7th season at UMBC (72-96), 17th overall (226-221) Affiliation: Northeast Conference 2000-01 record: 18-11 (13-7 NEC) Radio: Only on Internet, at UMBCRetrievers- .com Arena: Retriever Activities Center (4,024) Consensus NEC favorite: Monmouth Consensus UMBC prediction: 3rd Starters lost: 2 Outlook: UMBC has become a perennial contender in the conference, and nothing should be different this season despite a lack of numbers. Malik Wallace, a transfer from Allegany Community College, is in line to replace three-point shooting specialist Terence Ward, and Sullivan has high expectations for a slimmed-down Andrew Feeley in the post. Another championship run is a possibility.

Junior guard Ka'Reem Horton, a first-team All-JuCo All-American at Roxbury (Mass.) Community College, could be a key factor. UMES, which has seven players from the Chicago area, could surprise in the MEAC.
