With 2-0 win, Frostburg men capture 2nd league title in row

The Frostburg State men's soccer team beat Penn State-Barend, 2-0, en route to earning its second straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title yesterday.

After battling through a scoreless first half, the Bobcats (12-6-1) struck first as Jon Wieland beat goalkeeper Jacob Hordych in the 51st minute to give Frostburg a 1-0 lead.

Forward Steve Brett scored on a breakaway with 6:38 remaining to seal the victory.

Mary Washington 2, Salisbury 1: Liam Garland stopped two of three shots in a penalty-kick shootout to give the Saints (13-6-1) the upset victory over the Sea Gulls (16-3-1) in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament final.


CCBC-Catonsville 2, Community College of Rhode Island 1: Johanna Xecominos and Erin Gray tallied a goal apiece as the Cardinals (18-3) beat the Knights (17-3) to win the Northeast District Division II Junior College final.

Catonsville advances to the Division II national tournament, Nov. 15-18 in St. Louis.

Loyola 2, Rider 1: Danielle Ruppel saved Michele Herzog's shot in the penalty-kick shootout to lift the Greyhounds (8-8-2) over the Broncs (9-10-2) in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Loyola will face Marist today for the conference championship, the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Navy 1, Bucknell 0: Stacy Finley scored 4:59 into the first overtime to spark the Midshipmen (6-10) over the Bison, earning Navy the Patriot League regular-season title.

With the victory, Navy also earned the top seed in the league tournament that begins Friday.
