CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Dirk Schultz blistered the Farmington Country Club course for a 6-under-par 64, one shot off the course record, and came from five shots off the pace to capture the annual Middle Atlantic PGA Section Players Championship yesterday.

Schultz, head pro at Beaver Creek Country Club in Hagerstown, finished 71-64-135, and had a two-stroke margin on runner-up David Long, CC Woodmore, 68-69-137. Teaching pros Wayne DeFrancesco, Woodholme CC, and Mark Evenson, Suburban Club, tied for third at 138. As a result, DeFrancesco clinched MAPGA Player of the Year for the fourth time in the last eight years, holding off Schultz and David Hutsell, an assistant pro at Columbia CC from Towson.
